Originally designed as Classroom On Wheels, a touring program that took students to various historical and natural sites around the country, Virginia Is For Students has become it’s successor, choosing to focus instead on the natural, cultural, and historical aspects right here in our very own state. This program has had quite a bit of success: During the 70th Anniversary of Virginia State Parks, in 2006, students from our area traveled across the state, visiting 9 different state park, including Douthat, Fairy Stone, and Grayson Highlands in a little over a week. In 2007, during the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the students explored coastal Virginia, including Jamestown, False Cape, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. During the 2009 tour, the students stayed at Mason Neck State Park, and spent a good deal of time touring Washington, D.C., taking in the museums and historical monuments around our nation's capital.

The Cove Ridge Foundation has been instrumental in the success of this educational and adventure touring program. Through leadership, guidance, and financial contributions, the Foundation has aided the Virginia Is For Students tour for years, making it a vital and integral part of this program. Many thanks go to the members of the Foundation for their continued support.

This year marks the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War in Virginia – the 150th Anniversary. History has always been an important and interesting part of our nation’s, and thus, our state’s growth. From the industrial revolution, to the founding of our country, to the long lineage of many of our past Presidents – Virginia has played a major role. It is no different with the American Civil War. More battles were fought in our state than in any other. The ultimate outcome of the war – that is, the surrender at Appomattox that marked the end of the conflict – occurred on our very own soil. In our national history and in our state history, the Civil War is a vital and recognizable part of who we are.

For the 2010 Virginia Is For Students Tour, the Civil War in our very own state will play a key role. Students will visit Harper's Ferry, site of the infamous John Brown Raid, and a precursor of sorts (one of many) to the War Between The States. Students will visit and tour Manassas National Battlefield, the site of the first major land battle between the North and the South. Moving south, the students will take in the many sites and battlefields of the Fredericksburg area. To end the tour, students will visit the site of the last major battle and the surrender that ended the war at Appomattox Court House National Battlefield.

In addition, the Tour will mix adventure programming with the historical and educational aspects. The students will have the opportunity to hike through the historic areas of Harpers Ferry and tube the Shenandoah or Potomac River. On the fourth day of the tour, the students will visit Adventure Links Hemlock Overlook, where they will spend a full day immersed in the high- and low-ropes course and zip-line. There will be hiking and swimming opportunities at Lake Anna and James River State Parks, and the students will also get the chance to participate in a 6-mile canoe trip down the James River.

Due to the popularity and success of previous trips, the Cove Ridge Center and the Cove Ridge Foundation will be offering this year's program to 12 students from the City of Norton, and Lee, Scott, and Wise County schools in the summer of 2010.  More information about the itinerary and dates will be posted as soon as it is available.
