The Cove Ridge Foundation was instrumental in the production of the overwhelmingly successful “Classroom on Wheels” programs in 2004 and 2005. Area students traveled over 4,000 miles in 15 days to explore the historical and natural wonders of our nation from St. Louis to Yellowstone, including the Grand Tetons, the Badlands of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore and Devil’s Tower.
Given that 2006 was the 70th Anniversary of Virginia State Parks and
2007 is the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, we
decided to turn our focus for the tour a bit closer to home for 2006 and 2007. In response to the Jamestown
2007 anniversary, communities across the entire state are involved in “Legacy
Projects” which are special events and programs being developed for the
celebration, but will continue to have a positive, lasting effect on the
community afterwards. These programs focus on Virginia’s heritage and we feel
our students could greatly benefit from their involvement in this momentous
occasion. Virginia’s history is an integral part of the history of our nation. As the birthplace of many of our nation’s founding fathers, the site of many battlefields from both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and includes a varied topography with many unique natural features and habitats. The 2006 "Virginia is for Students" tour visited sites in Virginia focusing on state history, including Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg, and George Washington’s Birthplace. In addition, the students were introduced to Virginia’s native wildlife and natural areas such as the Great Dismal Swamp, Caledon Natural Area, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and one of the gems of our region, Grayson Highlands. In addition to the natural and historical sites, the students visited each of the six original Virginia State parks, Fairy Stone, Staunton River, First Landing, Westmoreland, Douthat and Hungry Mother, where the students were involved in programs covering the history and highlighting the special features of the area that were the basis for inclusion in the state park system. In the summer of 2007, 10 students from Lee, Norton and Wise schools embarked on a 6 night – 7 day tour that introduced them to the unique cultural, historical and natural wonders of our state. Virginia’s Educational Standards of Learning will be used as guidelines during the development and presentation of information to the students during the tour. Due to the popularity of the 2006 and 2007 trips, the Foundation plans on offering the program to up to 12 students from Lee, Norton, Scott and Wise schools in the summer of 2008. More information about the itinerary and dates will be posted as soon as it is available.
