What is Happening at the Park? Natural Tunnel State Park is open from 8 am to dusk. The park's Campground and Hiking Trails are open. To make reservations for our picnic shelters or the campground call 1-800-933-7275. Campground will close November 29, 2009 and reopen March 1, 2010. The Visitor's Center and Chairlift are open starting Memorial Day weekend, 7 days a week, Monday through Friday - 10am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm, through Labor Day Monday. September and October open weekends only, 10am to 5pm. The Wilderness Road Blockhouse is open from 2pm-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays May through October. The Pool will reopen May 29, 2010, Saturday of Memorial Day weekend for the 2010 season. Open daily, 10am to 6pm, until August 8, 2010, then open weekends only through Labor Day weekend and open Monday, September 6th for Labor Day. January 2010 "Cove Ridge Center Candlelight Series" January 24th, located in the Cove Ridge Center Auditorium within Natural Tunnel State Park, visual arts begin 2pm, performances begin at 3pm. Jack Beck performing Celtic music, and Wendy Welch, storyteller. Jack is an acclaimed performer of Scots traditional songs and ballads. He is a recording artist and workshop leader with over 40 years of experience. Wendy, who holds a Doctorate in Folklore from Memorial University of Newfoundland, is a renowned storyteller and a published writer. Tickets at door $8, students $4, season tickets $20, children 12 and under free. February 2010 "Cove Ridge Center Candlelight Series" February 28th, located in the Cove Ridge Center Auditorium within Natural Tunnel State Park, visual arts begin 2pm, performances begin at 3pm. Acoustic Swing Band performing music from the 20's, 30's, and 40's, well known for their lively and innovative approach to the swing genre, have been performing together for over four years. They have been recognized and applauded for their commitment for reviving popular songs of the past in a professional and entertaining format. Tickets at door $8, students $4, season tickets $20, children 12 and under free. March 2010 "Cove Ridge Center Candlelight Series" March 28th, located in the Cove Ridge Center Auditorium within Natural Tunnel State Park, visual arts begin 2pm, performances begin at 3pm, The Johnson County Chorale and CanJoe John performing. The Johnson County Chorale’s program is inspired by the Stephen Foster song “Hard Times Come Again No More.” The program will highlight Yankee Doodle, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Over There, Happy Days are Here Again, Sentimental Journey and many more. CanJoe*John, the "world's most unique musician, plays the world's most unique musical instrument, the canjoe." Awarded the adult 2007 "Bluegrass Instrumentalist of the Year" by the North American Country Music Association International (NACMAI), and having the distinction of being the first and only canjoe picker to ever perform on the Grand Ole Opry, he has literally taken his one-stringed thing, his canjoe musical instrument, to the outer limits! April 2010 "Cove Ridge Center Candlelight Series" April 25th, located at the Amphitheater within Natural Tunnel State Park, visual arts begin 2pm, performances begin at 3pm. Scott County Honors Band with A Sunday in the Park Concert, and the Kingsport Community Band under the direction of F. Scot Fleming. Experience what the great outdoors has to offer with programs at Natural Tunnel State Park. Enjoy a Saturday morning canoeing with friends and family, marvel at the views of Natural Tunnel from inside while wading through Stock Creek, or learn about the rich history of our region on a relaxing hayride. Reservations are required for the 2010 season, dates will be posted about the end of March for Canoe the Clinch, Stock Creek Passage, Fincastle Hayride, Snorkel the Clinch, adventures. Travel back in time as you interact with travelers and settlers from the 1790’s at the Wilderness Road Blockhouse. Learn what life was like in the time of Daniel Boone and the purpose of the Wilderness Road Blockhouse. The Blockhouse will be open 2-4pm Saturday and Sundays May through October. While you are at the Blockhouse check out the new Blockhouse Visitor Center, open from 2-4pm. Volunteers Natural Tunnel State Park is looking for volunteers to assist with staffing our Visitor Center, Contact Station, Park Office, Cove Ridge Center, Interpretation, etc. during the spring, summer, and fall seasons.
